I had forgotten how much I love medical drama. Now I remember why — It’s all heart, soul, life, humanity, people
I never liked being held to ransom by drama series aired on TV as it required me to watch at a specific time every day. I rebelled that is until Netflix came along. Netflix allows me watch at my own time and pace which means I now have the opportunity to watch all the drama series I have heard so much about. For a long time, I have been intrigued by shows like House MD and Grey’s Anatomy but recently discovered New Amsterdam, a 2018 medical drama TV series created by David Schulner based on the book Twelve Patients by Eric Manheimer starring Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine, and Anupam Kher. The series chronicles the twists, turns, intrigues and drama unleashed when a young medical director takes the reigns at the New Amsterdam, America’s oldest hospital, and shakes things up from top to bottom.
Medical dramas tend to remind us about human frailty, disease, life, death, pain, sorrow, and loss. They offer a necessary dose of realness (Real-life doctors, nurses, physicians, and other medical personnel may not agree as they complain that TV dramas are not accurate portrayals) reminding us about who we are as human beings and why we shouldn’t lose our humanity, empathy, hope, and faith
