Early Concepts of Work-Life Balance
‘Work is spiritual’ is a common saying. This is because the very concept of work was created by God to ensure that human beings are productive and self-sustaining. Work is part of human existence and an important part of everyday life. It takes up most of our waking hours; gives us purpose; opens up opportunities; helps us provide for our families; helps us fund our dreams, goals, and aspirations; and provides networking, mentoring, and friendship opportunities.
Work was designed by God as a way for us to share in the creative process. Since man was created from the land and returns there at death, he has a connection to the land. Work initially involved working the land to produce crops and tending to animals to produce livestock. This early definition of work involving agriculture and animal husbandry was designed in such a way as to involve the entire household and revolve around the homestead. Land remained in families being passed down from generation to generation ensuring the land was worked on and kept fertile and productive.
